Is President Trump About to Enter Macau's Gambling Market?
A company linked to President Trump secured four trademarks in Macau to operate in gambling, real estate, construction, and hospitality services.
Could the Trump brand be expanding to the world’s biggest gambling hub?
The business world is eager to find out what The Donald’s next move is, as a company linked to the American president has recently been granted four trademarks from the Macau government.
The trademark applications were made by DTTM Operations, a company affiliated with Trump.
They are the same applications that were made in 2006 (but recently lapsed), covering gambling, real estate, construction and hospitality services.
Trump has shown interest in Macau’s gambling industry for over a decade and, with the city’s current casino licenses set to expire in 2020, he could be gearing up to make a bid.
The four trademarks granted were for:
- Donald Trump
- Trump Tower
- Trump International Hotel and Tower
Macau is called the "Las Vegas of the East", with one of the biggest gambling markets in the world. It has overtaken Las Vegas’s profits, and gambling tourism accounts for 50% of its economy.
Even Macau’s non-gaming market is thriving, with hotel services, food & beverage and retail revenue hitting their targets five years earlier than the city’s government had predicted.
Macau is home to 38 casinos that are operated by owners, including Wynn Resorts, Las Vegas Sands, and MGM Resorts.
While it seems only natural for hotel and gambling magnates to flock to such a buzzing, burgeoning market, Trump’s interest has raised concerns.
Ethics lawyers and representatives of the U.S. Democratic Party are worried that foreign governments will be given the opportunity to influence the White House, should Trump open casinos and hotels in Macau.
Trump’s presence in Macau’s gambling market could have serious political repercussions. Investors, politicians and casino operators will be keeping a close eye on this story as it develops.
